Medical Clearance & Safe Care

Massage therapy is a regulated healthcare service in Ontario.

To ensure your treatment is both safe and appropriate, care is always guided by your current health status, comfort level, and any medical guidance you’ve received from your healthcare providers.

If your physician, surgeon, dentist, or another regulated provider has recommended activity limits or temporary restrictions, those recommendations are respected during massage therapy care.

In some situations, medical clearance may be requested before treatment begins — simply to support your safety and recovery.

When additional clearance may be helpful

Scar-focused care

This may apply if you’ve recently had:

  • Surgery or medical procedures

  • Open or healing incisions

  • Infections or wound care in progress

  • Skin grafts, drains, or ongoing post-operative recovery

  • Activity restrictions related to healing

Jaw & TMJD-related care

This may apply if you’ve recently had:

  • Dental, orthodontic, or jaw procedures

  • Jaw surgery, injections, or implants

  • Movement restrictions advised by a provider

  • Recent concussion or head injury

  • Ongoing neurological symptoms

  • Medical advice to limit physical or manual therapy

General safety considerations

  • For your wellbeing, treatment may be postponed or adjusted if there are:

  • Fractures or suspected fractures

  • Medical restrictions on activity or manual therapy

  • Situations where clearance is recommended by your healthcare provider

Massage therapy does not replace medical care or override medical advice.

When clearance is required, it simply helps ensure your treatment supports your healing safely.

Forms & Care Planning

To provide thoughtful, individualized care, all appointments include:

  • Health history & intake forms

  • Scar history (when applicable)

  • Sensitive area consent (when applicable)

  • Intra-oral consent for TMJD care (when applicable)

These forms help guide treatment pacing, comfort, and clinical decision-making.

A quick note on timing

To keep your sessions smooth and unrushed, completed forms are required before your appointment time.

This allows your care to begin promptly and comfortably when I arrive.
