SCAR CARE — MASSAGE THERAPY APPROACH

Overview

Scar tissue can influence movement, comfort, and tissue tension well beyond the visible area of the scar itself.

Even scars that are old, healed, or “no longer painful” may still affect how the body moves, loads, or adapts during daily activities.

Scar-focused massage therapy care is provided as part of Registered Massage Therapy assessment and treatment, with the goal of supporting tissue tolerance, mobility, and comfort — not diagnosing conditions or guaranteeing outcomes.

Why scars are addressed in massage therapy

Scar tissue forms as part of the body’s natural healing process after surgery, injury, or trauma.

Over time, scar tissue may:

Feel tight, restricted, numb, or sensitive

Pull with movement or posture changes

Influence surrounding soft tissues and joints

Contribute to compensatory movement patterns

These effects may be local or experienced elsewhere in the body.

Scar-focused massage therapy does not involve aggressive techniques and is guided by tissue response and tolerance.
